In 1983 Mark earned a BSEE from Ohio Institute of Technology, and played electric bass in the school's Jazz ensemble for three years. Post graduation Mark discovered the double bass and became regularly involved in big band Jazz, Jazz trios, and Bluegrass music in the Washington D.C. area.

In 1987 Mark attended a Gary Karr (double bass virtuoso) concert. Deeply inspired by Mr. Karr's performance, Mark began self-studying with the French bow. Months later, he auditioned for and was accepted into North Carolina's Raleigh Civic Symphony Orchestra bass section. Thus began a journey into orchestral double bass music. In 1989 Mark performed Saint-Saens The Swan in master class for Gary Karr(University of Georgia), and attended Edgar Meyer's master class (Metro State College in Denver) in 2001. In 2005 Mark made his solo performance debut with Denver's Orion Winds playing Marcello Sonata in Gm. In 2006 Lakewood Symphony Orchestra members recital, he presented Koussevitzky's four miniatures for solo bass with piano accompaniment.
